The Legend That Invites You To The Table.

Between Siena and Arezzo, where the roads have crossed for longer than anyone can name, the Chianti hills roll gold into the evening light. Here, at the foot of the ‘Colonna del Grillo’, sits a place that has always meant the same thing to every traveler who found it — rest and a good meal.

You have arrived somewhere storied. A crossroads that has fed the hungry, sheltered the weary, and gathered strangers around one warm table for generations.

This is Il Bivacco. And before you take your seat, let us tell you the story the road remembers.

The Legend of IL BIVACCO

Long before the first traveler struck flint at this crossroads, the land between Siena and Arezzo held a promise. Rest here. Break bread here. Stay awhile.

At the foot of the ‘Colonna del Grillo’, where old paths cross and the Chianti hills roll gold at sundown, that promise still stands. And this is the story the road has been telling for generations.

‘Bivacco’: More Than A Name

In the old tongue, a bivacco is a camp — a makeshift shelter thrown up under open sky. It was where soldiers laid down their arms, where shepherds gathered their flocks, where weary riders let their horses drink and their bones settle.

For centuries, this exact crossing served as such a place. The journey between Siena and Arezzo was long and dusty, and travelers would stop right here to rest, to eat, to share the warmth of a fire and the comfort of strangers become friends.

We took our name to honor them. Il Bivacco is a modern haven built on an ancient instinct — the human need to pause, to be fed, to feel welcome after a long road. Step through our doors and you join a lineage older than memory. The fire still burns. The table is still set. You are, as travelers always have been, expected.

Colonna del Grillo, More Than A Landmark

They call this place Colonna del Grillo — the Column of the Cricket.

History tells us Grand Duke Leopoldo II raised the pillar that gives the crossroads its name. But history rarely tells the whole tale. Ask the old-timers, and they will lean in and speak of the Festa del Grillo, the ancient Tuscan festival of the cricket, when the singing of that small creature announced the first breath of spring.

In these hills, the cricket has always meant more than its size. It sings of good fortune. It sings of fellowship. It sings of long evenings when doors stay open and no one hurries home.

And so the legend took root. Because this crossing brought together souls from every valley — merchants and pilgrims, poets and farmers — the place earned a reputation. Here, they said, the travelers chirped through the night, trading stories beneath the pillar until the stars faded and the crickets fell silent.

That spirit never left. It hums in every clink of glass, every burst of laughter, every stranger who arrives quiet and departs a friend.

A Historical Crossroad Rides Into Modern Day

There is a photograph, worn soft at the edges, that cycling folk speak of with reverence.

In it, a legend of the sport — Gino Bartali himself — flies past the Colonna del Grillo, head bowed against the wind, chasing glory in the storied Giro di Toscana. The road outside our door carried him and countless others through these punishing, beautiful hills.

To this day, riders come. They climb the Chianti slopes as their heroes once did, and when they reach the crossroads, they stop — because stopping here is the tradition, the rite, the small pilgrimage every cyclist owes the road. They rest their wheels against the old pillar. They fill their glasses. They tell the story of the photograph again, as if for the first time.

Whether you arrive on two wheels, four, or the soles of your own tired feet, you belong to this chapter now.

Your Visit Adds To The Legend

Come sit where the shepherds sat. Raise a glass where the crickets sang. Rest where the great riders rested. The road brought you here for the same reason it has always brought locals and travelers to this crossing.

Il Bivacco is waiting. Pull up a chair — we welcome you to join our story.
